SM Denim Mills
Vision-Led, Women-Powered Sustainability from Pakistan to the World
When the 2022 floods devastated communities across Pakistan, SM Denim’s partners and colleagues were among those directly affected. For Managing Director Asif Merchant, it was a call to action. He envisioned a future where SM Denim would drastically reduce its water consumption and chemical use — not as a marketing claim, but as a measurable, lasting change.
That vision became Indican, a patented dyeing process designed to minimize environmental impact. From that point, the women of SM Denim took the lead, turning an ambitious idea into a groundbreaking reality.
A Global Stage for a Pakistani Innovation
The Indican story debuted at Kingpins Amsterdam 2024, one of the most influential denim trade shows in the world. Produced by CP Films, the video began with Asif’s voice and presence, then wove in the perspectives of:
- Sahar Merchant CFA, Executive Director Finance
- Saima Saeed, DGM Processing & Quality (who spearheaded the patent)
- Mishal Ahmed, Deputy Manager ETP
- Muneeza Kamal, Assistant Dyeing Manager
- Sumbul Shahid, Deputy Manager Compliance
The film balanced:
- Vision & leadership – Asif framing the challenge and responsibility.
- Proof & process – lab testing, water treatment, and compliance checks.
- Empowerment & execution – women leading the technical and operational breakthroughs.
Results That Matter
The reception at Kingpins was immediate and powerful:
- Significant buyer inquiries from brands focused on sustainability.
- Praise for making women’s leadership central to a technical innovation story.
- Direct momentum toward new product lines, with CP Films involved in the next chapter.
